Mathematics: Why Study Mathematics at University? Options and Careers with Dr Marcus Tindall from University of Reading

The aim of this highly interactive webinar is to explore the question, ‘Why study Mathematics at university?’, engaging and enthusing students around life and learning at university and career prospects for Mathematics graduates.
Dr Marcus Tindall, an Associate Professor at the University of Reading, will present a short sample lecture in which your Year 12/13 students will be presented with a variety of Mathematics problems to solve.
Then, accompanied by an undergraduate Mathematics student, Marcus will engage your students in discussion about:
– studying Mathematics at university
– how to apply for a Mathematics degree (including hints and tips for the personal statement)
– the kinds of careers that might follow a degree in Mathematics
Marcus will talk in more detail about how he uses mathematical modelling within different medical applications.
Suitable for: This lecture would be appropriate for Year 12 and Year 13 students studying, or thinking about studying, Mathematics.

Preparation or Pre-Reading: None is required although students might like to consider questions they have about studying Mathematics at university.
The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
