Astrophysics: A Mysterious Supermassive Black Hole presented by Dr Sadie Jones from University of Southampton

8th February 2018 @ 11:30 - 12:30

In this webinar, Dr Sadie Jones will talk to students about her research in Radio Astronomy carried out at the University of Southampton. Building upon an explanation of black holes and the different types, Sadie will describe how she investigated the radio emission from an active supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy NGC 4051. She will go on to explain how the data collected from the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico was used to determine if the galaxy had a jet.

Sadie will be asking and inviting questions throughout the talk, which is expected to be thoroughly entertaining and enlightening.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: There is no pre-reading or preparation required for the session. Students may like to discuss questions relating to black holes prior to the event that they would like to ask Sadie.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
