In this Psychology session, Dr Louis Renoult, Associate Professor in Psychology in the School of Psychology at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Understanding Addiction.

He will start by evoking a noteworthy case of drug addiction, then briefly discuss psychoactive drugs use through evolution, as well as the important concept of motivational systems (that are thought to have evolved to bring organisms in contact with potentially beneficial resources, and away from danger).

Dr Renoult will then explain the role of the neurotransmitter Dopamine in reward, its link with psychoactive drugs, and the typical points of influence of drugs in the brain.

The material discussed constitutes a taster for lectures in Cognitive and Biological Psychology in the first 2 years of the BSc in Psychology at UEA.
