Involving parents in their children’s schooling is undeniably valuable. But delving beneath that reveals a range of issues that pose challenging questions – and not just about the best approaches to improving involvement. More broadly, this topic prompts us to think about social inequalities, ideas of community, and even the purposes of schooling.

In this session, Dr Mark Pulsford from the Department of Education Studies at the University of Warwick will introduce relevant theories and latest research into parental involvement and engagement. We will consider if parents are ‘hard to reach’ or if schools are; we will wonder who schools should be accountable to; we will ask which groups in society most benefit from common ways of involving parents.  A particular focus will be on fathers and their involvement, using recent research as a case study to examine the key themes in this topic.
