In this live interactive Sport & Exercise Science tutorial, we will be joined by Jon Cooper, Lecturer in Sports Coaching in the Department of Sport and Health at Solent University, who will explore the question Coaching or Bullying?

The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided in a Headliner recorded resource (see below). This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion.

The role of a sports coach is to provide a safe and positive environment, that can promote sports participation, support talent development and facilitate peak performance. We have to assume that coaches are attempting to do the best they possibly can for every participant. However, it is all too common to experience poor practice, some of which could be perceived as bullying or even abusive. Whilst this may be unintentional, it is crucial to be aware of and understand what best coaching practice might look like and how we can ensure that all sport participants have a safe, enjoyable and beneficial experience.

The aim of this session is to discuss the challenges associated with various forms of sport coaching and consider the impact on sports performers. In essence, when does “good” practice become “poor” practice? The recorded Headliner video (below) introduces and defines sports coaching and present concepts of “best practice” within various sporting contexts. The live session will be an open discussion to consider the implications of coaching behaviours and considerations for supporting best practice.

The session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial.
