In this live interactive Politics and International Relations tutorial for students studying Politics and International Relations and/or Geography, as well as those interested in Climate Change Governance more generally, we will be joined by Dr Hannah Hughes, Senior Lecturer in International Politics and Climate Change, and Dr Elin Royles, Reader. Hannah and Elin represent the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University and will present Global Governance & Climate Change.

In the run up to the 2023 Global Climate Change Conference being held in Dubai (30.11.23-10.12.23), this session will explore a key site of climate change governance – the annual Conference of the Parties or COP meetings. COPs are a key focal point in the governance of climate change where collective action between the world’s governments is negotiated. A wide range of other actors also shape the global response, including environmental NGOs, youth activists, business groups and Indigenous Peoples.

The session explores what goes on inside these meeting sites, showing how negotiations between countries are brokered and how civil society organizations try to influence the decisions made.

A level Syllabus Themes: Global Governance; International Organizations; Climate Change and UNFCCC.

The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided in the Headliner recorded resource below. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion.

The session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial.
