As part of UEA’s Natural Hazards Series, we are joined by Jenni Barclay, Professor of Volcanology in the School of Environmental Sciences, who presents ‘Does It Have To Be A Disaster? Humans & Hazards’.

There is no such thing as a ‘natural’ disaster! Or, is there?

Disasters happen when human systems are unable to respond appropriately to the challenges created by hazardous processes. We now know that these disproportionately affect those already made vulnerable by poverty, weak infrastructure, and access to resource.

This talk will use recent eruptions and earthquakes to learn some lessons about the creation of disaster risk and then consider whether geophysical disasters are always a failure of society or sometimes an inevitable consequence of an eruption or earthquake occurring.  We can then consider the most effective routes to doing better in the future.
