SUMMARY:Religious Studies/Philosophy: The Existence of God with Dr Philip Wilson from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nDr Philip Wilson teaches the Philosophy of Religion at University of East Anglia and\, in this Religious Studies/Philosophy session\, will run an interactive scenario for students on The Existence of God. \nPhilosophers have always been interested in the existence of God\, and some have come up with so-called proofs about why God must exist\, while others have claimed that to believe in God is to make a mistake. The problem is that such debates tend to take place in an abstract way that is very far removed from the lives of both believers and non-believers. \nThis session responds to the criticism by describing key stages in the life of an imaginary character\, Stephanie\, who is forced by what is happening around her to philosophise about God. You will be introduced to five dilemmas that she faces and asked to give advice to her. \nBy the end\, you will have encountered some of the major philosophical issues surrounding the existence of God\, and you will also be able to say why this topic is important in ordinary life. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Philip Wilson \n  \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Religious Studies\, Philosophy and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the speaker via typed comments and questions and/or via a microphone. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event. \nBooking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event\, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below: \n  \n  \nRegister here \n

SUMMARY:English Literature: The Handmaid’s Tale - The Power of Language and Communication with Dr Clare Connors from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this English Literature session\, Dr Clare Connors\, Associate Professor in the School of Literature\, Drama and Creative Writing at University of East Anglia\, will run an interactive talk for students on The Handmaid’s Tale. \nThe Handmaid’s Tale is a novel about power. Most obviously\, it offers a bleak\, dystopian picture of the power of patriarchy and of totalitarian regimes. But it is also a – rather more joyful – celebration of another kind of power: the power of language\, writing and literature. \nThat is what this talk will explore. We’ll crowd-source a list of the many different kinds of language and communication the novel represents\, from the lip-reading mentioned in the very first chapter onwards. We’ll tease out what the novel says about language\, relate this to what it does with language and then connect all this to its criticisms of totalitarian power. \nFinally (and turning to the epilogue) we’ll think about what the ideal reader of the language of\, and in\, this novel would be like. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Clare Connors \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, English Literature and related disciplines. The event will progress in a similar way to ‘Question Time’. \nWoven into the discussion\, the speakers are encouraged to shed light on how undergraduates engage in these critical issues during their studies. \n  \n  \n\nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom\, or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. SUMMARY:Politics: Ideology in Contemporary UK Politics with Dr Simon Griffiths from Goldsmiths\, University of London
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nIn this Politics session\, Dr Simon Griffiths\, Head of History\, Politics and International Relations in the School of Global Change at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, will lead an interactive talk on Ideology in Contemporary UK Politics. \nSimon will examine the role of ideology in contemporary politics. Westminster was traditionally dominated by the Conservative and Labour Parties. This made it possible to see politics as a clash between socialism and conservatism\, which contained very different views of the role of the state\, the importance of equality\, and the place of tradition in society\, for example. Yet these ideologies seem less useful in understanding our world today than they once were. \nThis talk looks at the transformation of the main ideologies in recent decades. It introduces the emergence of newer ideologies as influential players\, including feminism\, environmentalism and various forms of populism and asks: if we were to try and describe ideological divisions in the UK today for the first time\, would it be necessary to use terms like ‘socialism’ or ‘conservatism’ or would other descriptions be more useful? \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Simon Griffiths \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying\, or thinking about studying\, Politics and related subjects. Those who don’t follow these norms can face social sanctions. Yet\, we regularly see attitude and behavioural change over time – for instance\, the UK public are much more environmentally conscious than they were 25 years ago. \nThis talk will consider how climate change and environmental concerns became a mainstream political issue over time\, and how well minority influence can account for this change in attitudes and behaviour. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Ian Norman \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. SUMMARY:Law/Criminology: The Criminal Justice System - Analysing Crime and Criminal Conduct - University Tutorial with Lauren Harvey from Aberystwyth University
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n\n  \n \n  \nIn this live interactive tutorial\, designed for Law\, Criminology\, Sociology\, Politics and Psychology students\, we will be joined by Lauren Harvey\, Lecturer in Law in the Department of Law & Criminology at Aberystwyth University\, who will present The Criminal Justice System – Analysing Crime and Criminal Conduct. \n  \nThe criminal law has wide reaching consequences for all those involved with the criminal justice system and for society as a whole. But what does an effective criminal justice system look like and how easy is this to achieve? \nThis session explores the purposes and principles of the criminal law and analyses the boundaries of criminal conduct; illustrating why ‘crime’ is so difficult to define and to legislate for\, and how societal attitudes to crime may vary across history and the world. We will explore some of the great moral and legal debates and ask ourselves how the law should decide which acts constitute criminal offences. Should assisted dying\, or recreational cannabis be legalised? Should a 10-year-old be criminally responsible for their actions? Should we adopt Good Samaritan laws? Can killing someone ever be the right thing to do? \nThis workshop provides plenty of opportunity for interaction with hot topics and moral dilemmas to debate. \n  \nThe full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided below in the Headliner recorded resource. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion. \n \n  \nPlease note that we will cover some sensitive topics such as abortion\, euthanasia\, homosexuality\, death penalty and murder. We do not plan to go into great detail and the subjects will be sensitively and professionally handled. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Lauren Harvey \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom\, or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but access to the Headliner recording will continue to be accessible. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying or with an interest in studying Law\, Criminology\, Sociology\, Politics and Psychology and related subjects. SUMMARY:Health/Psychology: Mental Health – Recovery from Adverse Childhood Experiences - Applying Theory & Latest Research with Dr Paul Linsley from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nIn this Health/Psychology session\, Dr Paul Linsley\, Associate Professor in Nursing Sciences in the School of Health Sciences at University of East Anglia\, will explore the theory\, latest research and practice relating to Recovery from Adverse Childhood Experiences. \nAdverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) are a major public health concern and we begin by introducing ACE and their long-term impacts on mental health\, emotional regulation\, relationships and socio-emotional development. \nWhile trauma-informed care (TIC) exists\, Paul’s research\, carried out with Professor John Hurley\, identifies that we need tools to build enduring emotional resilience in patients\, and clinicians need strategies that go beyond symptom management to foster resilience. Paul will introduce the Developmental-Reparative Model (DRM) which integrates trauma neuroscience\, developmental psychology and\, critically\, Emotional Intelligence (EI) theory. In particular\, we examine how EI interventions have helped patients develop self-regulation and relational skills. \nJoin us to hear more about how the latest research in this field is proving transformative for both patients and clinicians in trauma-informed practice. \n  \nThis event will include discussion of sensitive topics\, including mental health challenges related to adverse Childhood Experiences. Some content may be distressing for certain viewers. Please take care of your wellbeing and feel free to step away at any time. Support resources will be shared at the end of the session. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Paul Linsley has extensive clinical and academic experience in acute and forensic mental health nursing\, alongside expertise in values-based practice\, evidence-based care\, and nurse education. SUMMARY:Organic Chemistry: How does NMR Spectroscopy Really Work and How do Organic Chemists actually use it? with Dr Michael Stephenson from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nNuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful tools chemists use to elucidate and confirm the structures of small organic molecules\, but how does it actually work? \nIn this interactive talk\, Dr Michael Stephenson from the University of East Anglia in Norwich will take students on a journey into the underlying principles of NMR spectroscopy. We will explore how signals are generated within the spectrometer\, moving beyond simplified models to understand the real physical processes involved. \nThrough interactive puzzles and challenges\, students will apply their knowledge and begin to think like chemists\, interpreting spectra to uncover molecular structures. \nThe session will connect these ideas to the concepts studied at A-level\, helping to bridge the gap between school-level descriptions and the deeper theory that underpins one of chemistry’s most important spectroscopic techniques. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Michael Stephenson \n  \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. SUMMARY:English Literature: Jane Austen\, Big Brother and The Handmaid’s Tale - Surveillance and Control with Dr Lucy Thompson from Aberystwyth University
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n\n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this live interactive English Literature session\, we will be joined by Dr Lucy Thompson\, Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Creative Writing in the Department of English & Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University\, who will present Jane Austen\, Big Brother and The Handmaid’s Tale: Surveillance and Control. \nWe often associate surveillance with modern technologies such as CCTV\, data tracking\, and social media monitoring. Yet organised forms of surveillance long predate these developments. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century societies were already shaped by practices of scrutiny and regulation that influenced behaviour and structured everyday life. Literature not only reflects these conditions but also helps us to understand how they work. \nThis webinar explores surveillance as a cultural and historical practice through a range of literary texts. Writing by Jane Austen\, for example\, shows how communities are organised through sustained acts of watching\, judging\, and policing others\, particularly in relation to gender and social expectation. These concerns remain visible in later fiction\, including Nineteen Eighty-Four and The Handmaid’s Tale\, where surveillance becomes more visibly institutional and political. Bringing these texts into conversation\, the session considers how literature reveals\, critiques and reshapes systems of observation and control across different historical contexts. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Lucy Thompson \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom\, or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides will be shared\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying or with an interest in studying English Literature\, Creative Writing and related subjects. Teachers and members of school staff\, as always\, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home\, or as a group from school/college. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: We encourage students to consider the topic and think about some of the key elements and questions in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices.
