Welsh Baccalaureate: Introduction To The Individual Project With Aberystwyth University, Welsh Parliament & National Library Of Wales

This event will comprise 3 workshops of no more than an hour each.

Aberystwyth University: The University’s session will help students ask the right questions in their projects. It will involve looking at different titles for different subject areas and the workshop will encourage students to think about the challenges associated with choosing research questions. This will be done by drawing on examples from world leading academic researchers and illustrate the advantages of different ways of doing research.

Welsh Parliament: The Senedd Education Team’s session will mainly focus on how to choose an appropriate topic for the Individual Project and how to access reliable sources of information around the topic. The session will be practical and interactive, and will broadly cover:

• How to choose an appropriate subject in relation to Wales and its devolved powers
• Which sources of information are reliable, as well as tips to critically evaluate the reliability of different sources
• Where to access reliable information from both a Wales and UK perspective

National Library of Wales: The National Library’s Education Service will focus on the importance of referencing and acknowledging others’ work, an essential component of a comprehensive Individual Project. The session will look specifically at using Harvard Referencing, and will include examples of how to gather information from a variety of sources, and present it correctly in the Bibliography or Reference list. There will be opportunities during the webinar to practice referencing, and also time to hear about the booklet published by the National Library to assist students with the procedure.

Suitable for: Year 12 students from schools in Wales, studying for, or thinking about studying for, the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: None is required.
