Voters across the 50 states of the USA go to the polls tomorrow to elect a new president and vice president. They’ll also be electing Senators, House Representatives, Governors, Members of state legislatures, Sheriffs, Education Board Members, County Auditors, Supervisors and a host of other politicised roles as one of the largest electoral machines in the world swings into action.

Mark Shanahan will look at the election process in the US, busting apart a ballot paper to show how much more it is than simply a vote for Harris or Trump. He’ll look at the state of play going into the election and the various permutations likely to land the White House and the two Congressional bodies – the House and the Senate – and what wins in each for the Democrats or Republicans will mean for the country – and the impact for the rest of the world.

He will align what’s happening in the US with the study of politics at university and will show how such current events fit into the academic study of Politics and International Relations.

Dr Mark Shanahan is an Associate Professor of Political Engagement at the University of Surrey. A former journalist, he focuses on presidential politics and has written and broadcast widely on outsider presidencies with a special interest in Eisenhower and Trump.
