UK Politics: Keir Starmer’s Labour Government One Year In – A Bumpy Ride With Professor Richard Whitaker From University of Leicester
25th June 2025 @ 12:45 - 13:30
In this UK Politics session, Richard Whitaker, Professor of Politics in the School of History, Politics and International Relations at University of Leicester, will run an interactive talk for students on Keir Starmer’s Labour Government One Year In – A Bumpy Ride.
The Labour Party won a big majority at the 2024 UK general election but how has it fared since then?
This victory was fragile with Labour scoring only 34% of the vote. Starmer’s first year as PM has seen riots, low economic growth, the uncertainty resulting from Donald Trump’s presidency of the USA, big questions about Europe’s role in defence, an attempt to re-set the UK-EU relationship and a poor set of local election results for Labour.
In this session we will look at how Labour has performed in office since the election and compare this with what we know about how previous governments have fared in their first twelve months of government.
