This session will be delivered by Dr Janine Wilkinson, a lecturer in Biomedicine from the University of East Anglia.

Scientific ideas and concepts have to be communicated from one research scientist to another. Researchers usually work within a network at a local level – within their own university/institution; but they often have links to other researchers across the UK and even across the world! This means that they need to communicate their experimental findings in writing so that other scientists can read about their progress and discoveries.

This session will explain:

  • How Scientists Communicate – revealing the process behind peer reviewed papers.
  • Why Scientists Communicate – The importance of publishing their experimental findings.
  • Who Scientists Communicate with – Other Scientists, Journalists, and the General Public.
  • What approaches you can use in your essay to improve your own scientific writing.

We will also take a look at what is considered good scientific language and contrast it against other forms of written articles you may come across in newspapers and in magazines.

We hope you find this session engaging and thought-provoking.

Please see Preparation/Pre-Reading below which includes a suggestion for preparing for and making the most of the session.

Lecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Janine Wilkinson

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, STEM and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Please could students spend some time before the session thinking about written communication in science using this SHEET. For the session, it would be great if students could have this in front of them with their ideas/questions on it. These could then be added to during the session. Students can also think about questions they have about studying STEM at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
