SUMMARY:Sport/Sociology: Closing the Gap? Gender Inequality in Sport with Dr Kate Russell from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this Sport/Sociology session\, Dr Kate Russell\, Associate Professor in Physical Education in the School of Education & Lifelong Learning at University of East Anglia\, will run an interactive talk for students entitled Closing the Gap? Gender Inequality in Sport. \nThis interactive\, university-style seminar introduces students to critical thinking and evidence-based discussion\, focusing on gender gaps in sport. Understanding the gender gap in sport is vital because it reflects broader issues of fairness\, opportunity\, and representation in society. Sport is a powerful cultural force—inequalities in pay\, media coverage\, and leadership not only affect athletes but also shape public perceptions and aspirations. By exploring these gaps\, students learn how social\, economic\, and cultural factors influence who gets to participate\, succeed\, and be recognised in sport. \nOver 45 minutes\, students examine key areas such as pay\, media coverage\, participation\, and leadership\, using real data and media sources. The session explores assumptions in this area\, discussing what a “gender gap” means\, introducing academic concepts like structural inequality\, and identifying cultural norms. Students will analyse short data sources and learn how to develop arguments and question evidence. Students will be encouraged to explore differences across sports\, professional vs grassroots issues\, and the meaning of fairness\, equality\, and equity. \nThe session closes with individual reflection\, linking the topic to university subjects like sports science\, sociology\, psychology\, and media studies. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Dr Kate Russell \n  \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Sport\, Sociology\, Psychology\, Media and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students are encouraged to consider some of the issues and questions they may have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard.
