Sociology: Thinking About Gender Through Sociological Perspectives: Crime, Identity And Society With Xavier L’Hoiry And Kitty Nichols From The University Of Sheffield

12th February 2020 @ 11:10 - 12:10

In this interactive online talk, Xavier L’Hoiry and Kitty Nichols, representing the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, will explore various aspects of gender through a sociological lens.

Xavier will begin by discussing gender with respect to crime and deviance. Historically, men appear to commit significantly more crime than women – why might this be? Notably however, recent trends suggest women are committing more crime than ever. Xavier will explore why these trends might be taking place.

Allowing time for students to discuss the issues raised in Xavier’s talk, Kitty will then follow by further reflecting on gender in society and discuss how changes in male and female roles in society more broadly might be behind these changing crime trends. Kitty will ask whether we think gender still matters, and whether men and women may be swapping roles, and if so, why? Is this always a bad thing?

The session will close with a general discussion and Q&A relating to the issues raised, and students will also have the opportunity to find out more about further study at the university.

Suitable for: Year 12s and Year 13s studying or thinking about studying Sociology, Criminology, and related subjects.

It is also worth making students aware that it will be interactive and they will have the chance to ask and respond to questions.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. Further details are here: Connecting in to a Channel Talent Event (Please Click)
