So You Think You Know Anime? With Mika Brown, Associate Professor of Japanese Language At University of East Anglia
3rd December 2025 @ 16:00 - 16:45
Do you love anime? Do you think you know it well? This fun and interactive session will take you beyond the screen. We will explore how anime reflects Japanese culture—school life, food, traditions, and values. But that’s not all! We will dive into the hidden world of subtitles. Do English subtitles really match what the characters are saying in Japanese? You may be surprised at the differences!
Through the session, you will discover how simple words like “I” and “brother” carry meanings that subtitles cannot fully capture. And you can learn why studying Japanese can open a whole new way of experiencing your favourite shows.
Lecturer Profile: Mika Brown is Associate Professor of Japanese Language in the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies at University of East Anglia.
