right4me Philosophy – Insights Into University Modules & The Learning Experience With University of East Anglia & The University of Sheffield
30th June 2021 @ 16:15 - 17:15
right4me is a series of subject specific webinars for current Year 12 & 13 students. The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules whilst affording students the opportunity to talk to different universities and make informed comparisons about studying for, in this case, Philosophy degrees.
In this session we will be joined by The University of Sheffield and University of East Anglia, who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their degree programmes in the form of a mini lecture based on one of their undergraduate modules.
Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to these modules and to their Philosophy degrees more generally.
With 30 minutes each, the respective talks and speakers will appear below when available:
- University of East Anglia: Dr Davide Rizza, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies, will introduce you to a first year module at UEA called Radical Philosophy. The module focusses on two traditions of thought aiming at the integration of critical reflection and intelligent (social, educational, political) practice. These traditions go back, respectively, to Karl Marx and to American pragmatism. Their goal is to reconstruct ethical norms, economic arrangements and educational institutions for the sake of making social transactions a fruitful basis for individual growth and for the enrichment of common experience. This module invites students to join the philosophers we study in a critical and practical activity, choosing current problems they wish to criticise or tackle, and producing work that goes toward identifying the deep roots of existing social ills and finding ways to alleviate them.
- The University of Sheffield: Dr Luca Barlassina will discuss Interdisciplinary Philosophy at Sheffield – The Philosophy of Cognitive Science. Luca Barlassina, Lecturer in Philosophy and Director of both the MA in Philosophy and the MA in Cognitive Studies, will discuss some of Sheffield’s interdisciplinary modules such as Philosophy of Cognitive Science; Pain, Pleasure, and Emotions; and Mind & Language. Are non-human animals conscious? What is the relation between language and reality? Why does pain feel bad? These are questions that puzzle philosophers as well as psychologists, linguists, and neuroscientists. At Sheffield, students have the unique opportunity to explore how results from cognitive science bear on philosophical questions about mind and language, and how philosophical analysis can illuminate the foundations of the mind sciences. In Dr. Barlassina’s talk, he will focus on a particularly fascinating issue: Does thought depend upon language? He will discuss this problem by taking into account both classical philosophical arguments and recent empirical findings on logical abilities in preverbal infants and Great Apes. Is thinking a child’s game—or even a monkey business? Participate in this event to find it out.
By hearing from 2 universities, students will also appreciate how the further study of Philosophy can vary between institutions, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making. There will be time and opportunity for participation and questions.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students and equivalent studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Philosophy and related disciplines.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the 2 topics and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Philosophy at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
