  • Cardiff University: Derek Lang, Professor of Pharmacology and Director of BSc Medical Pharmacology, will give a broad overview and flavour of what an undergraduate might expect to be immersed in across the whole of the BSc course. From the “nuts and bolts” of Pharmacology (Pharmacokinetics – what your body does to the drug; Pharmacodynamics – what the drug does to your body) in Year 1, to the “drugology” (antibiotics, antipsychotics, cardiovascular interventions, antivirals, drugs of abuse, tropical disease treatments and much more) in Year 2 and the forefront of research-led teaching from International experts in the Final Year. Our teaching is very much “patient-centred” (virtual that is!) and often encompasses interactive case-based sessions where clinical scenarios are used to bring theory to life.

  • University of East Anglia: We will be joined by Dr Emily Hobson, Lecturer in Pharmacology in the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology. This talk will provide an overview of studying pharmacology and the role that pharmacologists have in science and wider society. We will explore the variety of topics covered in a BSc Pharmacology and Drug Discovery degree, including cardiovascular pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, drug delivery, pharmacokinetics, cancer, immunology and neuropharmacology. Using an example experiment to put you in the ‘shoes’ of a pharmacology student, we will delve into the practical skills you will learn while studying pharmacology that aim to give you hands-on experience in studying and developing drugs for different diseases. Finally, we will also hear from a current BSc Pharmacology and Drug Discovery student to give insights into what studying pharmacology is like and what kinds of careers you could consider post-graduation.

right4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Post 16 pre-university students. The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules. In addition, by hearing from 2 universities for 30 minutes each, students will appreciate how the further study of Pharmacology can vary between institutions, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making.

In this session we will be joined by two universities, University of East Anglia and Cardiff University, who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their Pharmacology degrees.

Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to their modules and to their Pharmacology degrees more generally.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Pharmacology and related disciplines. Student groups, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the content of the talks and questions they may have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via typed comments and questions and/or a microphone. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
