right4me Modern Languages – Insights Into University Modules & The Learning Experience With University of East Anglia & University of Portsmouth
March 20 @ 15:45 - 16:45
- University of Portsmouth: Paul Joyce, Senior Lecturer and Subject Area Leader for Modern Languages at the University of Portsmouth, will explore what it is like to study a modern languages degree at a UK university. Paul and the languages team will deliver a micro-talk on assessments, different ways of spending the Year Abroad, and how to add further languages as part of an Institution-Wide Language Programme. The Portsmouth MFL team will also present its lecturers’ research, presented at the House of Lords, which will explain the new career opportunities that are available for language graduates.
- University of East Anglia: Dr Sharon Black, Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation and Course Director for Language and Communication Studies, will deliver a micro-workshop on subtitling, and will talk about how at UEA you can learn to subtitle movies and TV programmes using industry-standard software on our module Technological Tools for Subtitling and Dubbing. Sharon will also explore what it’s like to study languages at UEA, providing an overview of the practical, hands-on degrees on offer. Her talk will cover the wide variety of modules to choose from to develop your linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills, and also to learn new skills in areas including translation, interpreting, global communication, management studies, and even digital media and video production! Sharon’s talk will also illustrate the many opportunities to get involved in activities and work experience outside the classroom and the new career opportunities available for language graduates.
right4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Post 16 pre-university students. The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules. In addition, by hearing from 2 universities for 30 minutes each, students will appreciate how the further study of Modern Languages can vary between institutions, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making.
In this session we will be joined by two universities, University of East Anglia and University of Portsmouth, who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their Modern Languages degrees.
Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to their modules and to their Modern Languages degrees more generally.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
