DESCRIPTION:Register here \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nright4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Year 12 & 13 students\, and equivalent. The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules. In addition\, by hearing from 2 universities for 30 minutes each\, students will appreciate how the further study of Mathematics can vary between institutions\, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making. \nIn this session we will be joined by two universities\, University of Nottingham and University of East Anglia\, who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their Mathematics degrees and opportunities for joint honours including Mathematics. \nEach university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to their modules and to their Mathematics degrees more generally. \nThe respective talks and speakers will appear below when confirmed. There will be time and opportunity for participation and questions. \n \n\nUniversity of East Anglia: We will be joined by Professor Shaun Stevens from the School of Mathematics. Modular arithmetic is likely to be one of the first bits of new “pure’’ mathematics that you will see as a student at university. Despite its apparent simplicity\, it underpins many important real-world applications\, as well as leading to deep and exciting mathematics. In this session we will begin exploring modular arithmetic\, seeing the ways in which studying mathematics at university is similar to\, and different from\, school mathematics; and also describe day-to-day life and how you would experience learning mathematics as an undergraduate student.\n\n \n\nUniversity of Nottingham: We will be joined by Dr James Preston from the School of Mathematical Sciences who presents ‘Exploring Heat Transfer Using Mathematics’. Did you know that we can use mathematics to calculate the temperature of a cup of tea over time as it cools? If not\, you do now! In this session\, we will learn how to do this (you will get the chance to try some maths yourself too!). We will also highlight some more interesting science and engineering applications in which maths can be used to explore heat transfer. We will then discuss what studying maths is like at university and some of the many possible career options that a maths degree opens up.\n\n \n\n \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Mathematics and related disciplines. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the content of the talks and questions they may have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Mathematics at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
