right4me Law vs Criminology – Insights Into University Modules & The Learning Experience With Dr Esther Snell & Bradley Kershaw From Solent University & Dr Charmian Werren From University of East Anglia
September 30 @ 16:30 - 17:30
- Solent University: We will be joined by Dr Esther Snell , Course Leader of Criminology, and Bradley Kershaw. Lecturer in Law. Why do people harm others, steal, defraud, riot? Criminology and Law are two disciplines that, often working together, try to understand the causes of that behaviour, and create strategies to maintain social harmony and justice. Using a sentencing report of a young offender, we explore the different approaches of the two subjects at Solent and the many employment opportunities they offer.
- University of East Anglia: We will be joined by Dr Charmian Werren, Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Law. In this session, we will explore how the two disciplines of Law and Criminology approach the difficult issue of corporate crime. By looking at an example of a corporate crime, we’ll consider how criminological theory has tried to explain such crimes, and consider how the law has attempted to respond to the problem. In doing so we will see how the Law, Criminology, and Law with Criminology programmes at UEA give students insights into tricky real-world challenges.
right4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Key Stage 5 students, and equivalent.
The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules. In addition, by hearing from 2 universities for 30 minutes each, students will appreciate how the further study of Law and Criminology can vary between institutions, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making, particularly with respect to differentiating between the 2 disciplines.
In this session we will be joined by Solent University & University of East Anglia who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their Law and Criminology degrees whilst explaining key differences and similarities.
Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to their modules and to their Law and Criminology degrees more generally.
There will be time and opportunity for participation and questions.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Key Stage 5 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Law, Criminology and related disciplines.
