right4me Criminology – Insights Into University Modules & The Learning Experience With University of Surrey & Goldsmiths, University of London

29th June 2021 @ 16:15 - 17:15

right4me is a series of subject specific webinars for current Year 12 & 13 students. The sessions support students’ current studies and interests by giving an insight into curriculum areas covered in university modules whilst affording students the opportunity to talk to different universities and make informed comparisons about studying for, in this case, Criminology degrees.

In this session we will be joined by 2 universities, including University of Surrey, who will begin by exploring the fascinating academic content of their degree programmes in the form of a mini lecture based on one of their undergraduate modules.

Each university will then offer an insight into the teaching and learning experience related to these modules and to their Criminology degrees more generally.

With 30 minutes each, the respective talks and speakers will appear below when available:

  • University of Surrey: Dr Francesca Menichelli is the programme director for the BSc criminology at the University of Surrey. In the first half of her session, she will discuss the structure of the Criminology programme, the range of optional modules available to prospective students, placements and employability. In the second half, she will run a mini-taster on ‘crime and media’, to give attendees a sense of what teaching is like on the Bsc Criminology – hint: it’s great!
  • Goldsmiths, University of London: Dr Jennifer Fleetwood is programme convenor on the BA Criminology and BA Sociology with Criminology. She will give an overview of what makes criminology at Goldsmiths distinctive and will offer a 15 minutes taster session from her module ‘Explaining Crime’.

By hearing from 2 universities, students will also appreciate how the further study of Criminology can vary between institutions, contributing to the depth of their HE research and assisting informed decision making. There will be time and opportunity for participation and questions.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students and equivalent studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Criminology and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the 2 topics and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Criminology at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
