SUMMARY:Research Methods: Skills & Insight - Focus On Data Handling & Statistics - Tips For Non Mathematicians With Professor Andrew Lovett From University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this Research Methods session\, Professor Andrew Lovett from University of East Anglia will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Data Handling & Statistics – Tips for Non Mathematicians. \n\nIncreasingly students across the disciplines are required to handle and analyse data. For those students without a Mathematics/Statistics background\, this can often feel like the most challenging aspect of their research. In this session we will look at simple approaches students can apply to build confidence and aptitude for the handling of data and for carrying out simple statistical analysis. \n\n\nWe will focus on the quantitative analysis of data from questionnaire surveys and cover techniques such as cross-tabulations and the chi-square test.  The methods will be explained and illustrated using data from a survey of public attitudes to different energy sources and increased cultivation of bioenergy crops. \n\n  \nLecturer Profile: Professor Andrew Lovett \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent). This will be relevant for those studying subjects such as Psychology\, Sociology and Geography who perhaps don’t have a Maths background but are expected to have some level of understanding of data handling and statistics. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance\, with respect to challenges they may face or questions they have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event. \nBooking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event\, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below: \n  \nRegister here \n  \n
