Dr Philip Wilson teaches the Philosophy of Religion at University of East Anglia and, in this Religious Studies/Philosophy session, will run an interactive scenario for students on The Existence of God.

Philosophers have always been interested in the existence of God, and some have come up with so-called proofs about why God must exist, while others have claimed that to believe in God is to make a mistake. The problem is that such debates tend to take place in an abstract way that is very far removed from the lives of both believers and non-believers.

This session responds to the criticism by describing key stages in the life of an imaginary character, Stephanie, who is forced by what is happening around her to philosophise about God. You will be introduced to five dilemmas that she faces and asked to give advice to her.

By the end, you will have encountered some of the major philosophical issues surrounding the existence of God, and you will also be able to say why this topic is important in ordinary life.
