In this live interactive Psychology tutorial, we will be joined by Dr Nicholas Walsh, Lecturer in Developmental Psychology in the School of Psychology at University of East Anglia, who will present Understanding Psychopathology and Mental Health.

The format to Nick’s session is as follows: 1) participants will watch a (Headliner) video presentation, 2) participants take part in a secure online discussion, 3) participants join the online interactive tutorial with Nick at 1.30pm on 7 November.

1) In the video Nick provides an overview of key issues regarding our understanding of psychopathology and mental health. Nick discusses the different perspectives on the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘psychopathology’ and how these perspectives have become formalised in psychiatric classification systems. Nick then discusses the implications of these differing perspectives and formalisations on mental health policy and practice and young people’s mental health.

2) Between watching the Headliner video and taking part in the live tutorial, Nick has set up a secure online discussion using the Kialo.edu platform (see further details below under Preparation/Pre-Reading). Participants are to discuss the thesis ‘The medical concept of Mental Disorder should be abandoned’.

3) In this live interactive tutorial on 7 November, Nick will clarify, discuss, and answer questions regarding the Headliner video content. Nick will also review the postings in the Kialo.edu discussion.

The Headliner video is available here:

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom, or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but the Headliner video recording will continue to be accessible.

Suitable for: Key Stage 5, and equivalent, students studying or with an interest in studying Psychology and related subjects. Teachers and members of school staff, as always, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home, or as a group from school/college.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to watch the Headliner recording and then contribute to the Kialo.edu forum.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard.
