In this politics, international relations and environmental sciences session, Dr Pierre Bocquillon, Department of Politics, Social & International Studies and Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on: The European Union after the ‘Green Deal’: a global climate actor?

The European Union has often been hailed as a ‘climate leader’, siding with other climate ambitious countries in pushing for accelerating international efforts to address climate change. At home, as part of its ‘Green Deal’, it has adopted ambitious targets and policies to reduce its Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 55% in 2030 and reach ‘Net zero’ by the middle of the century. Following the EU election of June 2024, which saw the election of a new European Parliament and the appointment of a new European Commission, the bloc enters the tricky phase of implementation of its commitments. But does the ‘Green Deal’ live up to the EU’s ambitions to lead internationally on climate change?

In this interactive session, we will look at the EU’s record, both domestically and internationally. We will explore the nature and effects of the EU ‘Green Deal’, including on other countries beyond EU borders. Finally, we will reflect on EU-UK climate cooperation post Brexit: whether the two sides align and how to forge a stronger relationship to tackle climate change.

The session will develop knowledge and critical thinking skills to support students in their politics, international relations and environmental science studies, as well as their future aspirations.
