Order, Order, Order! Tools and techniques to effectively engage in political debate.

You are warmly invited to join this interactive Politics session, hosted by Beth Derks-van Damme, a creative academic in the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies at UEA.

Beth will spend the majority of the session considering how you as young people can influence decisions being made today by global, national, regional and local leaders about your future lives. For the last part of the session, Beth will then move on to explore the skills and techniques you can employ to ensure your arguments are heard, looking at presentation of oral and written arguments and how to anticipate and address counter arguments.

Not only will this session offer insight into how to maximise your influence at different levels of Politics, it will be particularly beneficial in supporting your coursework and giving you confidence in your own communication abilities.

Lecturer Profile (Please Click): Beth Derks-van Damme. Beth has got a wealth of experience in engaging young people in instigating positive societal change.  She leads the Future Leaders project and the Parliamentary and Public Policy research module where students are conducting research for MPs and people in The House of Lords. She also hosts annual Political Speech Competitions.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Politics and related disciplines.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance, with respect to challenges they may face or questions they have. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Politics at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
