Politics: Focus On Political Ideologies – Anarchism – With Dr Alex Leveringhaus From University of Surrey

25th June 2021 @ 12:45 - 13:30

In this Politics webinar for schools and colleges, Dr Alex Leveringhaus from University of Surrey will deliver a topic based talk exploring Political ideologies – Anarchism.

Alex will address the following issues and questions:

One of the guiding assumptions of modern political thought is that human individuals are, in a moral sense, free and equal. How, then, can this assumption be squared with the existence of the state? For, states are typically coercive in nature. They make laws and enforce these against their members. To enforce laws, states threaten their members’ freedom by imprisoning them if they do not comply. How can this be legitimate? Anarchists argue that it can’t be. Human freedom and equality are, according to anarchism, incompatible with the existence of the state. Indeed, the state, anarchists contend, must be abolished. But is it possible to do so? And how could society function without a state?

Through the discussion, the university is encouraged to provide an insight into the teaching and learning experience of this topic at university, and compare and contrast how other subject areas across the Politics spectrum might be treated. Students will gain an insight into how these subjects continue beyond A-levels, T-levels, IB, BTEC and equivalent qualifications.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
