Physics: Understanding the Universe – The Astrophysicist’s Toolkit: More Than Just Telescopes! With Dr Robert Ferdman From University of East Anglia
30th November 2022 @ 14:15 - 15:00
In this Physics session, Dr Robert Ferdman, Associate Professor in Physics from University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Understanding the Universe – The Astrophysicist’s Toolkit: More Than Just Telescopes!
When envisioning an astronomer, the classic picture one typically would have is that of a scientist peering through the eyepiece of an optical telescope. In this modern age, however, astrophysicists – both observers and theorists – rely on a variety of tools and skills at their disposal to acquire, process, and analyse observational data, as well as to predict and interpret results in the context of fundamental physical principles.
In this seminar Dr Robert Ferdman will be presenting a taste of some of these tools and their diversity. This will of course include modern telescopes that detect light from across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays. Robert will also provide a sample of the range of physics that are brought together to understand the Universe. Finally, he will discuss some of the computational tools that we utilise to perform the rapid calculations that have now become necessary in tackling the analysis of massive volumes of data, as well as large-scale theoretical simulations.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Physics and related disciplines.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Physics at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below:
