Philosophy: Teleporters, 3D Photocopiers, and Your Survival with Dr Tom Sinclair from Wadham College, University of Oxford
20th February 2017 @ 12:45 - 13:45
Dr Tom Sinclair is a Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy at Wadham College, University of Oxford.
In this talk, entitled ‘Teleporters, 3D Photocopiers, and Your Survival’, Tom will ask students to think about some intriguing examples involving human cloning and human fission and to rank the examples according to the degree to which they should be feared.
Then he will try to convince them that they care less about their survival than they think. At all stages he will be asking for ideas and replies.
During the talk, Tom will emphasise the general approach that’s distinctive to university-level study in Philosophy and humanities.
Suitable for: Year 12 and 13 students. It is relevant particularly to those thinking about studying Philosophy especially, and humanities subjects more generally. This particular session is open to Bedfordshire schools. We hope to run further events for schools in other regions.
Preparation/Pre-reading: There is no pre-reading or preparation required for this session. Students may like to consider questions surrounding the subject matter and studying this at university.
Lecturer Profile: Dr Tom Sinclair
The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.
Booking a Place: If you have a group that you would like to take part in this event, please contact us via email or by using the contact form on the right of this page. We will book your place subject to availability.
