  • University of Surrey: Caroline Nicholson, Professor of Palliative Care and Ageing will educate and enthuse perspective Nursing students about the  importance of end of life care in their work. Using her career to explore three key issues in End of life care:
    • Key Issue One- End of life matters because-  fundamental human right to be cared for with dignity and respect as they approach the end of their lives,  its about ending well and legacy, its a public health issue- stays with the people left behind- impact of  bereavement on mental l and physical health of family and friends
    • 2) Key Issue Two- End of life care is central to the role of every nurse and happens every where
    • 3) Key Issue Three requires personal and organisational conditions –  being cared for as well as cared about
  • Solent University: Nimrod Taabu is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Sport, Health and Social Sciences. Mental Health Nurses are likely to encounter patients receiving end-of-life care at one point or another in their career. There is an expectation that nurses are required to be skilled in caring for patients during end of life, whilst supporting the patients’ family and loved ones. However, numerous nurses have reported end-of-life as being one of the greatest stressors in clinical care (Zheng, Lee and Bloomer 2017). The emotional and psychological distress encountered by nurses includes aspects such as “anxiety, grief, distress, anguish, feelings of helplessness, frustration and lack of confidence in coping with patient death”. All these emotions can be overwhelming for nurses; therefore, coping can be viewed as one of the responses to the psychological and emotional challenges following what can be a distressing experience. This micro-teach session will focus on the key skills to equip student nurses on how to cope when faced with these emotive situations. Whilst also learn how to safeguard and maintain their own well-being. This session will consider; – De-briefs, supervision, Reflective Practice, Talking Therapies among various other mediations that can be employed as supportive measures for student nurses.

insight4me is a series of subject specific webinars for Year 12 & 13 students, and equivalent. The sessions directly support students’ current studies by giving an insight into particular curriculum areas whilst affording an understanding of how these subjects continue beyond A-levels, T-levels, IB, BTEC and equivalent qualifications and vary between universities.

In this insight4me Nursing online event for schools and colleges, Solent University and University of Surrey will each have roughly 30 minutes to deliver a punchy, topic based ‘micro’ talk with Nimrod and Caroline drawing on their extensive experience to discuss the development, preparation and support of nurses to deliver End of Life Care.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.
