Neuroscience: Becoming a Neuroscientist by Isabel Christie, University College London
11th December 2014 @ 11:20 - 12:20
Isabel Christie will present an interactive talk about how to become a neuroscientist. She is currently completing a PhD at University College London and will discuss her research using an MRI scanner to image activity in the brain and a new technique called optogenetics that uses light to stimulate the brain.
As part of this talk Isabel will talk about her path to becoming a neuroscientist; how she struggled with maths at school and why she chose to study neuroscience at university instead of her first love English literature. Isabel will talk about why she thinks science careers are very accessible to people from all backgrounds and why we need more scientists.
Finally, if there is time, Isabel will touch on the ethical issues she has faced concerning the use of animals in research.
Suitable for: Year 10 & Year 11
Preparation/Pre-reading: Nature voted optogenetics method of the year in 2010 and made a 5 minute video about it. Students may find it helpful to watch this before the videoconference: available here. Additionally it will be helpful for students to consider questions in advance relating to studying this subject area at university and what a career might look like.
