Natural Sciences: A Long Way From Home! Using Interdisciplinary Science To Investigate The Long-Range Transport & Fate Of Polluting Chemicals In The Arctic With Professor Cris Halsall, Society For Natural Sciences

14th June 2021 @ 13:30 - 14:30

There are an array of chemicals (certain pesticides, industrial chemicals etc) that are very persistent in the environment and pose a health risk to humans and wildlife.

Some of these chemicals can undergo long range environmental transport and end up in very remote regions like the Arctic.

With a focus on organofluorine ‘forever’ chemicals Professor Cris Halsall (Director of Natural Sciences at Lancaster University) will explore the interdisciplinary science used to understand this issue as well as improve global chemical-use policy.

In this event, Cris is representing the Society for Natural Sciences, a national learned society that promotes interdisciplinary science education and research.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 and 13 students (and equivalent). This session is designed for students from all backgrounds and interested in how science can tackle humanity’s most urgent challenges.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: No preparation or pre-reading is required although you may wish to consider the proposed subject area and related questions you might like to ask.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.
