SUMMARY:Modern Languages: Using Your Modern Language Skills For Interpreting & Subtitling With Dr Sharon Black & Dr Carlos De Pablos-Ortega From University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this Modern Languages session with UEA\, Dr Sharon Black\, Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation\, and Dr Carlos De Pablos-Ortega\, Associate Professor in Spanish and Applied Linguistics\, both from the School of Politics\, Philosophy\, Language and Communication Studies at UEA\, will run an interactive talk for students on Interpreting and Subtitling. \nThis session considers ways in which participants can use their knowledge of other languages and cultures to translate foreign language films via the creation of subtitles\, and to interpret for others\, between English and the modern languages they are learning.    \nThrough practical examples we will explore the (linguistic\, intercultural and transferrable) skills that subtitlers and interpreters need and some of the main challenges they face. We will also gain insights into some of the latest technologies that subtitlers and interpreters use to carry out their jobs as language professionals. \nThe session will be run in English and will draw on multilingual examples from French\, Spanish and German but will be relevant to students studying all modern languages. \nThe session will develop thinking\, skills and approaches to support students in their Modern Languages studies and future aspirations. \n  \nLecturer Profiles (Please Click): Dr Sharon Black & Dr Carlos De Pablos-Ortega \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Modern Languages and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. The session will be run in English and will draw on multilingual examples from French\, Spanish and German but will be relevant to students studying all modern languages. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Modern Languages at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
