In this Modern Languages session with UEA, Dr Sharon Black, Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation, and Dr Carlos De Pablos-Ortega, Associate Professor in Spanish and Applied Linguistics, both from the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies at UEA, will run an interactive talk for students on Interpreting and Subtitling.

This session considers ways in which participants can use their knowledge of other languages and cultures to translate foreign language films via the creation of subtitles, and to interpret for others, between English and the modern languages they are learning.

Through practical examples we will explore the (linguistic, intercultural and transferrable) skills that subtitlers and interpreters need and some of the main challenges they face. We will also gain insights into some of the latest technologies that subtitlers and interpreters use to carry out their jobs as language professionals.

The session will be run in English and will draw on multilingual examples from French, Spanish and German but will be relevant to students studying all modern languages.

The session will develop thinking, skills and approaches to support students in their Modern Languages studies and future aspirations.
