SUMMARY:Modern Languages: Far-Right Movements in Europe - Comparison & Cultural Differences With Ilse Renaudie From University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this Modern Languages session\, Ilse Renaudie\, Associate Professor in French Language in the School of Media\, Language and Communication Studies at UEA\, will run an interactive talk for students on Far-Right Movements in Europe – Comparison & Cultural Differences. \nIn recent years\, a clear shift in the place of far-right movements in Europe has been developing\, both in terms of attracting more voters and in their growing influence on mainstream parties. While common factors\, such as national debates about identity\, concerns about security and narratives of a “refugee crisis”\, are playing an important part\, how do far-right movements exist and evolve within national contexts in Europe? \nThis interactive session will focus on the relationships between societies and the far-right in several European contexts\, from British to French\, Italian and German.  We will look at concepts such as populism\, political instability and protest and try and grasp key cultural specificities between those countries. \nThe session will be delivered in English with reference to relevant language. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Ilse Renaudie teaches French language and cultures as well as translation between French and English. Through her teaching\, she is particularly interested in the development of fluency and phraseology through translation as well as through collaborative project work. Ilse teaches French language from first to final undergraduate and has experience of coordinating students’ period abroad. In her classes\, she often uses news items\, with various purposes including summarising\, translating\, acquiring vocabulary and comparing the presentation of news across languages as well as within French national and regional or local news. \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Modern Languages and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the speaker via typed comments and questions and/or via a microphone.
