Modern Languages: The Art of Translation for Subtitling and Dubbing: Distilling Nuance and Meaning with Dr Alex Mével From University of Nottingham

8th June 2021 @ 11:15 - 12:15

Dr Alex Mével, Associate Professor, will talk on audiovisual translation, and will discuss the history of subtitling and dubbing, as well as what these processes involve nowadays. Subtitling and dubbing are two types of ‘constrained’ translation (that is, translation with a set of constraints). For instance, subtitles can normally only use two lines and a limited amount of characters, whilst dubbing needs to factor in other constraints such of lip synchronisation.

Alex will lead an interactive masterclass for Languages students exploring techniques and approaches to distilling nuance and meaning for an audiovisual audience.
