In this live interactive Modern Foreign Languages/Italian tutorial, we will be joined by Professor Federico Faloppa, a leading academic from the Department of Languages and Cultures at University of Reading, who will explore Migration in Italy: between reality and perception.

  • In the recorded talk, we look at the facts and figures of migration in Italy, from the Unification of the country in the 19th century to the 21st century. We then present some key events that have modified the approach to, and the perception of, migration in the Peninsula, particularly in the last three decades. Finally, we focus on the representation of migration in media and political discourse, looking at the distortion of facts and narratives, and the overrepresentation of the phenomenon for propaganda.
  • In the seminar that follows on from this talk, students will be encouraged to share and discuss their own knowledge of migration phenomena in Italy and beyond, bringing their own perspectives and reactions to the table in order to make this a truly stimulating session.

The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided in the Headliner recorded resource below. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion.

The session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial.
