In this live interactive Modern Foreign Languages/French tutorial, we will be joined by Dr John McKeane, a leading academic from the Department of Languages and Cultures at University of Reading, who will explore Extremism in France.

  • In the recorded talk, we look at the term ‘extrême’ and by mapping out the relative importance of extremism and of centrism in France. We then present some analysis from recent scholarship about the different types of extremism, and also looking at the notions of extremism, terrorism, and radicalism. Finally, we focus in on the detail of discussions specific to France, looking at the way the term ‘extremism’ is used.
  • In the seminar that follows on from this talk, students will be encouraged to share and discuss their own knowledge of extremism in France, bringing their own perspectives and reactions to the table in order to make this a truly stimulating session.

The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided by the university in the Headliner recorded resource (see below) which offers insights into the key academic research and debate related to this fascinating topic. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion.

The session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial.
