Migration & The Media: Who Gets to Participate, Speak and Belong in Society? with Dr Lindsay Balfour & Dr Philipp Seuferling from University of Glasgow
November 13 @ 13:30 - 14:15
This session draws from current headlines to introduce students to some of the contemporary topics within Communications and its role in society and culture.
In particular, we will discuss media coverage of recent events depicting migrants arriving in the UK. Together, we will analyse examples from various media platforms, building vocabulary around core concepts in media studies and visual and textual analysis.
We will ask important questions around communication and power: How does public communication shape who gets to participate, speak and belong in society? How can political responses be legitimised and normalised?
This is a challenge-led session and will offer interactive and discussion based approach to one of the most significant questions we face as a society, as well as the role of media, communications and technology in understanding and intervening in such challenges.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying Media, Sociology and related subjects. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.
