Media: Race, Representation and The Media with Dr Anamik Saha from Goldsmiths, University of London

9th March 2018 @ 14:00 - 15:00

This session will look at the representation of race in the British Media. Focusing mostly on television, we will look at the way that black and Asian people have been represented historically, in a range of genres, from news stories to comedy sitcoms.

In the main part of the session we will analyse and discuss contemporary representations of black and Asian people, thinking about how they might challenge or reinforce stereotypes about minorities.

The session aims to demonstrate the value of academic enquiry into issues of media representation, making a case for why we need to take the media seriously when trying to understanding social attitudes to race and ethnicity.

Lecturer Biography: Dr Anamik Saha

Suitable for: Year 12s and Year 13s studying or interested in studying Media.

Preparation/Pre-Reading:

Dr Saha at Goldsmiths asks students to watch the following video links in advance of the session and to think about the 3 questions:

Top Boy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiFAL7rdunE (warning: contains adult language! But nothing teenagers haven’t heard already!)

Citizen Khan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meenVyNo2Uw

Questions:

1) Do you think these representations are stereotypical, or authentic?

2) If stereotypical is this necessarily a problem?

3) Does it make a difference who wrote these texts? (In the case of Top Boy a working class Irish man, and Citizen Khan a British Pakistani)

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 or 4 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.

Booking a Place: If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event, please contact us via email or via the contact form at the top right of this webpage. Subject to availability we will book a place for you.
