Media: Media Representation – Identity With Professor Barnie Choudhury From University of East Anglia
11th May 2023 @ 12:45 - 13:30
Professor Barnie Choudhury, award winning journalist and Lecturer in Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism, will present Still hideously all white on the night: why are we failing when it comes to ethnic representation in media?
It’s been 22 years since the then BBC director general, Greg Dyke, said his institution was “hideously white“. A generation on, what has changed? We see more people of colour on our screens and hear them on our airwaves, but where true power lies – those with budgets and the ability to hire and fire – nothing has changed.
In this session, Barnie will be considering why we don’t seem to be making progress; how people of colour can take control of their own destinies; and what is being done to change the lack of racial representation in media.
