Media/Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence and 4 Big Ethical Debates in the Media with Peter Bradley and Minsak Nanang from University of Surrey

In this interactive Media/Computer Science event with University of Surrey, we take a close look at ethical issues in the Media which are being driven by the emergence and evolution of Artificial Intelligence.
Led by our inspiring speakers, Peter Bradley and Minsak Nanang, we will address four big ethical debates affecting the Media which are all currently being played out in our legal system, have a profound impact on wider society and have significant implications for the technical design of AI systems.
- AI ‘stealing’ media content (for training)
- Fake content (news, imagery/video & relationships)
- Bias within models/algorithms (gender, age, ethnicity)
- Impact of AI on employment (both within the media or tech sectors).
In a chaired discussion, Peter and Minsak will engage the audience in a debate around central questions of deep tech, media impact, ethical considerations and policy responses.
These issues are of critical importance in both academic disciplines, Media and Computer Science, and we look forward to engaging in an interdisciplinary way with your questions and arguments.
About our Speakers:
Both Peter and Minsak are currently carrying out PhDs at University of Surrey focused on people-centred AI.
Peter has previously spent many years in Consultancy organisations such as IBM, Accenture and Atos, delivering technology programmes to help change organisations. In addition Peter has managed media studios across Africa for the BBC, producing TV, Radio, Social, and training journalists.
Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.
As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.
Suitable for: 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Media, Computer Science, Sociology and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level.
The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the speaker via typed comments and questions and/or via a microphone. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
