SUMMARY:Mathematics: Probability & Its Real World Applications - Markov Chains - University Tutorial With Dr Jonathan Jordan From The University of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n \n  \nIn this live interactive Mathematics tutorial\, we will be joined by Dr Jonathan Jordan\, a leading academic in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sheffield\, who will explore Probability & Its Real World Applications: Markov Chains. \nWe will consider the theory and use of Markov Chains. During this session you will discover how probability theory is used to determine the likelihood of moving from one state to another where the probability of each event depends only on the state attained in the previous step of the chain. \nDr Jordan will introduce you to Markov chains by applying the concept to a game of Monopoly\, and using this example\, you’ll have the chance to calculate your own probabilities in a pre-tutorial task (instructions in video below). Join us and explore the array of real world applications of Markov chains from modelling population dynamics to the underlying principles behind Google’s PageRank algorithm. \nThe full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided by the university in a Headliner recorded resource (below). This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion. \n \n  \nThe session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial. \n  \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Jonathan Jordan \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom\, or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but access to the Headliner recording will continue to be accessible. \n  \nSuitable for: Key Stage 5\, and equivalent\, students studying or with an interest in studying Mathematics and related subjects. Teachers and members of school staff\, as always\, are welcome too and participants can join as individuals from school/college or home\, or as a group from school/college. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to watch the Headliner recording and consider the concepts. In the pre-tutorial task explained in the video above\, please explore what happens with the probabilities in the “post-apocalyptic” version. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event. \nBooking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event\, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below: \nRegister here \n  \n
