In this interactive event, we are joined by Jonathan Ridley, Head of Engineering in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Architecture and Engineering at Solent University, who will present Future Challenges – Saving The World With Maths & Physics.

Jonathan will open the session with an explanation of engineering as an applied science before examining five big sustainability challenges for society, encompassing waste, agriculture, technology and energy.
Jonathan will lead a discussion of the critical issues of each and explore how Maths and Physics are needed for possible solutions. Students will be able to see the relevance of their current studies by relating specific Maths and Physics principles they are encountering to real world problems. At the same time students will gain an insight into how the study of Engineering offers the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to society through cutting edge applied science.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying Mathematics, Physics or Engineering and with an interest in the crucial role these disciplines play in solving humanity’s greatest challenges. Teachers and members of school staff are welcome to join with a student group or participants can join as individuals from school/college or home.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: No particular preparation or pre-reading is required but students might like to consider questions related to the topic and/or about studying Engineering at university.
