In this Mathematics/Economics session, Dr Bahar Ghezelayagh, Associate Professor in Financial Economics in the School of Economics at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Applying Maths to Understand & Tackle the UK Economic Crisis. Bahar teaches First-year maths to students who have not studied A-level maths, where students apply maths in an economic context.

It is forecasted that UK would be the only Group of Seven major advanced economies (G7) to shrink in 2023, largely because the prices of the goods we buy (food, fuel) and services we use have risen dramatically. The UK Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets eight times a year to decide what monetary policy actions they need to take (such as raising interest rates) to keep inflation manageable.

In this session together we will look at how inflation is calculated and what Headline and Core inflations are, and why is it that inflation is such an important economic measure. We will look at what the MPC does to tackle the UK economic crisis, in particular what economic and mathematical models they use.

This session does not require any prior knowledge in maths or economics. It would be particularly suitable for students who are curious to know how everyday basics of maths and algebra (as well as more complex concepts such as differentiation) could be used in measuring key economic trends, as well as for those who are only studying economics.

You could watch some of the May’s Monetary Policy Report Press Conference here.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Mathematics/Economics and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and questions they have. Students can also think about questions about studying Mathematics/Economics at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.
