SUMMARY:Mathematics: Applications of Prime Numbers with Professor Shaun Stevens from University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this live interactive Mathematics tutorial\, we will be joined by Shaun Stevens\, Professor of Mathematics in the School of Engineering\, Mathematics and Physics at University of East Anglia\, who will explore Applications of Prime Numbers. \nThe full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion will be provided by UEA in a Headliner recorded resource at least one week before the event. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion. \nPrime numbers are positive integers which have exactly two factors\, 1 and themselves; so they begin 2\, 3\, 5\, 7\, 11\, … They are the fundamental building blocks of arithmetic: every positive whole number can be made by multiplying together prime numbers and\, if you write the prime factors in increasing order\, there is only one way to do this; this is called the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic and has been known since antiquity. A consequence of this is that there are infinitely many prime numbers: this is famously already proved in Euclid’s Elements\, a series of books from around 300BCE. What is perhaps more surprising is that\, as well as being of theoretical interest\, prime numbers are very useful\, both in human invention and in nature.  \nIn the pre-recorded talk\, I will explain this background to prime numbers and then talk about some of the simpler places that prime numbers arise. In the following interactive session\, I will explain in more detail some further applications which require a bit more mathematics. \n. \nThe session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial. \n  \nLecturer Profile: Professor Shaun Stevens \n\n  \n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Mathematics and related subjects. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students are asked to watch the Headliner video in advance of the session and consider the points and questions introduced. Students can also think about questions about studying at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting onto a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the speaker via typed comments and questions and/or via a microphone. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event. \nBooking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you would like to take part in this event\, please register your interest using the link to the registration form below: \n  \nRegister here \n
