Mathematics: Actuarial Skills – Is It Better Value To Pay For Your Mobile Phone Up Front Or On Contract? With Esther Glover, FIA, University Of East Anglia

9th May 2019 @ 14:00 - 14:45

Is it better value to pay for your mobile phone up front or on contract?

The answer to this question depends on so many things including what we mean by ‘better’ but compound interest can also be used to combine cash flows to create a single point for comparison.  The use of compound interest underlies much of traditional actuarial work and its use allows us to determine the ‘time value of money’ which is one of the first topics you’ll cover in an actuarial science degree.

In this short presentation, Esther Glover, course director of BSc Actuarial Sciences at University of East Anglia, will give you a glimpse into this topic, UEA’s degree programmes and how you can apply your maths skills to an exciting career as a professional Actuary.

Suitable for: Year 12/13 students studying Maths and interested in applications of Maths as well as finding out about exciting study and professional options at university and beyond.

Preparation or Pre-Reading: In terms of preparation for the students, there isn’t anything specific apart from encouraging students to think about some issues relevant to the talk and also making them aware that it is interactive and they will have the chance to ask and respond to questions. They are friendly sessions so they should have fun too.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. Further details are here: Connecting in to a Channel Talent Event (Please Click)

We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 3 to 5 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience. In this event there will be three groups of schools taking part increasing the opportunity to participate.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event, please click here

Subject to availability we will book a place for you.
