SUMMARY:Mathematics/Actuarial Science: From Driverless Cars To Risk Free Journeys With Dr Robert Whittaker & Esther Glover From University of East Anglia
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n\nSelf-driving cars need to provide an experience that is both safe and comfortable for their passengers and\, in this interactive webinar\, we will look at how mathematicians can contribute to the development of existing and emerging industries. \nDr Robert Whittaker from the School of Mathematics will begin this by examining how mathematics can help ensure a smoother ride when a self-driving car needs to come to a halt. \nEsther Glover\, from the School of Computing Sciences\, will then introduce you to Actuarial Science where we can use mathematics to understand the risks involved in many activities including getting into a driverless car. The impacts of this are significant in insurance. Anywhere there is risk and uncertainty you will find the application of actuarial maths\, even when choosing which mobile phone contract is the best. \nEsther will illustrate some of the key skills of an Actuary. \nElon Musk CEO of Tesla recently said when talking about their plans to build an insurer; \n“I would love to have some high energy actuaries\, especially. I have great respect for the actuarial profession. You guys are great at math. Please join Tesla\, especially if you want to change things and you’re annoyed by how slow the industry is. This is the place to be. We want revolutionary actuaries”. \n  \n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \n  \n  \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Robert Whittaker & Esther Glover \nSuitable for: Year 12/13 students studying Maths and interested in real world applications as well as finding out about exciting study and professional options at university and beyond.
