DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nIn this Law session\, Dr Miranda Bevan\, a leading academic from Goldsmiths\, University of London who previously practised as a criminal barrister\, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Building a Defence. \nEver wondered how a defence lawyer persuades a jury to find a defendant not guilty? This session will look at how lawyers go about the task of building a defence. What questions do lawyers ask (and not ask)? Who decides what approach to take? What is a defence lawyer looking for when they read a case? \nUsing an imaginary criminal case the session will take students through the process of building a defence. You will learn how defence lawyers approach a case and develop your own legal reasoning skills. Can you work together to persuade the jury to secure an acquittal for our imaginary defendant? \n  \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Miranda Bevan \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Law and related disciplines. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and can also think about questions they have about studying Law at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
