Law/Criminology: The Criminal Justice System – Analysing Crime and Criminal Conduct – University Tutorial With Lauren Harvey From Aberystwyth University
5th December 2023 @ 15:45 - 16:30
In this live interactive tutorial, designed for Law and Criminology students, we will be joined by Lauren Harvey, Lecturer in Law in the Department of Law & Criminology at Aberystwyth University, who will present The Criminal Justice System – Analysing Crime and Criminal Conduct.
The criminal law has wide reaching consequences for all those involved with the criminal justice system and for society as a whole. But what does an effective criminal justice system look like and how easy is this to achieve?
This session explores the purposes and principles of the criminal law and analyses the boundaries of criminal conduct; illustrating why ‘crime’ is so difficult to define and to legislate for, and how societal attitudes to crime may vary across history and the world. We will explore some of the great moral and legal debates and ask ourselves how the law should decide which acts constitute criminal offences. Should assisted dying, or recreational cannabis be legalised? Should a 10-year-old be criminally responsible for their actions? Should we adopt Good Samaritan laws? Can killing someone ever be the right thing to do?
This workshop provides plenty of opportunity for interaction with hot topics and moral dilemmas to debate.
The full context/introduction to this live and interactive discussion is provided below in the Headliner recorded resource. This recording can be watched as a class activity or independently in preparation for the discussion.
The session aims to deepen students’ understanding of the topic whilst enabling them to access and experience a live online university tutorial.
